How to Stop Having Nightmares and Bad Dreams

Nightmares are vividly realistic and disturbing dreams that can rattle you awake from a deep sleep. They often set your heart pounding from fear. Nightmares occurs most often during rapid eye movement sleep, when most of dreams takes place. You experience nightmares most often in the early morning hours. Nightmares and night terrors both cause people to awake in great fear, they are different. Night terrors usually occurs in the first few hours of falling asleep. But they are experienced as feelings, not dreams. How to Stop Having Nightmares and Bad Dreams:

Treat any underlying disorders

If your nightmares are the result of an underlying condition such as restless leg symptom or sleep apnea, receiving treatment for these helps to reduce nightmares.

  • If your nightmares are related to anxiety, depression, certain therapy or medications might help you to alleviate these conditions and reduce nightmares.
  • A medicine known as Prazosin is often prescribed to help patient’s anxiety and panic disorders, and helps to alleviate nightmares.


Avoid eating before bed

Eating before going to bed can trigger nightmares, as food speeds up your metabolism and your brain becomes more active. Therefore, it’s a good to cut out bed time snacks, especially those that are high in sugar.


Reduce stress

Stress contribute to nightmares, so take time to relax throughout the day and aim to go to bed with a calm and clear mind. The following practices can also help to reduce stress:

  • Yoga and meditation are good activities for relieving stress and mindset. Simply practice for a few minutes each day.
  • Other activities like reading, knitting, running or spend more time with your family and loved also helps to relieve stress.
  • Taking a hot bath before bed also helps you to unwind the stresses of the day and leave you calmer and more relaxed.


Talk to your doctor about any medications

You must be tired of nightmares, consult your doctor on priority basis. Although medication helps to relieve stress but sometimes medications can also increase the likelihood of nightmares, if you feel this might be an issue for you.

  • Anti-depressants and certain blood pressure medications can cause nightmares, so speak to doctor about switching to a different drug.
  • Sometimes a change in drug or with a particular drug can also cause nightmares.


Improve your sleep

Nightmares can cause sleep deprivation and sleep deprivation can also cause nightmares. Therefore, take steps to improve the quality of your sleep to prevent nightmares.

  • Make your bedroom a relaxing environment.Keep your bedroom neat and tidy, make sure it’s dark enough.
  • Use a white noise machine to block any undesirable sounds. Keep your bedroom for sleeping only if there is a work setup in your bedroom then this may lead stress to you.
  • Set normal temperature that is not too hot or cold. Make sure your bed is comfortable.
  • Tiring yourself with physical exercise is a great way to improve your sleep, exercising is a great way to do the same. But just don’t exercise right before going to bed it will leave you amped up for sleep.
  • Also try to avoid drinking, smoking or consuming caffeine less than 3 to 4 hours before bedtime. It can interfere your sleep.
